Video Reflection No.2 The Story of Stuff

In the series of The Story of Stuff videos directed by Annie Leonards, several concepts such as consumers, governments and production are brought together and discussed. the presenter talks about the link between the several poles and how they affect one another and the world in general.

The Story of Electronics is also a very interesting video discussing the world of electronics, their importance in our life and their quick product life cycle. There is always a challenge of keeping the balance between  a reasonable life cycle for products and manufacturer profit making . Regarding this topic, I could say that as a designer it would be difficult to maintain that balance. As a future designer i also agree with the video on try to use non-toxic materials in the manufacture of our everyday products.

The Story of Cosmetics demonstrated the power of governments and big companies decide the products which get distributed in the markets. As a designer I could wonder about how manufacturing companies can be very clever at creating a wonderful display of their products which are actually toxic and poisonous.

The very interesting thing about these set of videos is that it demonstrates how everything we do in the world is somehow related and that by performing operations we think of as improvements to our world is  actually destroying it. Whats visually appealing about the videos is the use of simple drawings paired with great presentation skills of the presenter which make a very engaging set of videos.

Amy
The concept is useful for solving obesity issues. The actual way the lid of the bottle is to be operated should be figured out in more detail. A screw and pour system was suggested by Amy.

Katherine

The bottle can also be placed upside down so that the very last drops of oil can be used, in order to do this the bottle should have  a wide flat lid. The pouring system also needs to be figured out.

Gizem
Oils aren't necessarily best being kept in plastics, so glass bottle was suggested by Gizem,

Tutor (Mar)
Better to develop this concept for a salad dressing product since oil is not used much on salads!!

Regarding work done on three separate concepts: Milk carton pull tab, extendable box and oil serving cup bottle.

Katherine
The extend box seems like a good idea, since it will save extra usage of cardboard. Could be improved by rethinking the tabs used to lock the carton in place. Try and reduce the amount of cardboard used.

Alex
The tab placed on the milk carton seems to be a good idea. It would save a lot of material since it only uses the cardboard of the actual milk carton. Having the silhouette of tab carved into the carton help pop the tab easier. But, the tab would not be easy for older people to use. Grip would be hard for them, and the cardboard tab might break when pulling it.

Tutor (Mar)
None of the ideas proposed involve a social issue except for the oil serving control design. Work more on this concept.

Other tutor (Sam)
It is best to concentrate on one social issue area rather than several and propose different concepts for the same issue.
